Winged Helmet

by Guthrum on February 9, 2012

I was always led to believe that Vikings had horns on their helmets, but every depiction of a Viking on a Viking bicycle, of which I am aware, shows a winged helmet.  If you follow that link, you will see that in the 19th century the winged helmet became widely used to depict ancient Celtic, Germanic and Viking warriors.  In other words it is a modern invention.  There doesn’t seem to be much evidence that Vikings wore horned helmets either.

On a more positive note, the winged helmet is associate with the god Mercury, who went around at high speed – so certainly appropriate to a Viking bicycle.
