1952 Viking Tour of Britain Model – SN 189

This frame is assumed to be a Tour of Britain model based on the Nervex Professional lugs and the pure numeric (no letters) serial number, which is a feature of all Tour of Britain frames known to me at this time.  It is assumed to be one of the early Tour of Britain frames based on the low serial number, the rectangular brass head badge that used to be fitted (now lost) and the fact that it does not have the reinforced pump pegs and reinforced rear brake bridge which are features of later Tour of Britain frames.  As with all things Viking of this era, there is a shortage of data, so certain assumptions have to be made, and may change if new facts come to light.  Ian Steel won the Tour of Britain in 1951, so likely the first Viking Tour of Britain frames and bicycles were produced in late 1951 or in 1952.  This frame makes an interesting comparison with SN 484, believed to be from 1953.  Click on the photos to enlarge:
