Viking Hosteller – SN B4888

Viking Hosteller B4888

This bike probably dates from the mid-1950s and looks to be very original apart from the mudguards (fenders).   Nice touches are the “V” logo on many of the fasteners.  The Hosteller was essentially a touring bicycle, usually shown in the catalogues with drop handlebars but alternatives were available.  The Hosteller was available with a regular diamond frame or as a Ladies’ version as this one.

Apparent anomalies on this bike are the 27.2 mm seat post, indicating butted frame tubes which were not specified on this model, and a serial number beginning with the letter B, whereas it would be expected to be H, the deisgnation of the Hosteller series – it might indicate a 1953/4 build date before Viking used the series letter as the serial number prefix, but this is uncertain.
